Why do people use self expression in books?

I feel Krakauer's stories are an important asset to the book even thought they take a little fact creditability out of his writing because by reflecting McCandless in himself he is showing that although Christopher just ran off and we may see a little bit of selfishness in him, he was only human. While not everyone can relate to McCandless's actions, by relating himself to the boy, Krakauer reminds the reader that we all deal with issues in life and although some may seem irrational you should never judge someone. Circumstances play a big role in our lives and situations are only fully understood by the person involved making the decisions. As for the creditability of this book, I believe by leaving out personal stories it would of felt more like an informative collection of information but i think evoking some personal relationship to McCandless wouldn't of been done without adding his personal accounts, something he meant to do for a reason.

  1. I personally think that Krakauer story adds to his credibility of his writing, due to the fact that he really can relate to McCandless and isn’t just writing blindly about a topic. He truly does understand how McCandless feels and why he would take such a dangerous journey into the Alaskan wild. People say that you can really relate to a person if you walk a mile in their shoes and Krakauer defiantly did that. He emotionally can connect with McCandless and I think that adds to the story. I also think that showing how other people did similar things makes McCandless seem like less of an idiot.

  2. I also have to agree with Cammi, I feel like it adds credibility to his writting because at first I was confused as to why he showed so much interest, but now I know. After reading that chapter, I understood why it was that McCandless didn't retreat from his adventure to go get help.
